Chapter 1 - Part 1

As a door was slamming, Diana knew that her precious little whirlwind was awake and when seconds later the door to her studio flung open, she grinned.
"Good Morning, Selene," she greeted her daughter and looked up from her notes. "Mum! Have you started writing yet?" Without replying to the greeting, the girl threw herself on the chair and looked to her mother in expectation. Her cheeks where lightly reddened because of the running and even her breathing had not slowed down yet. Still she did not care about that at all but was just waiting for an answer.
Diana chuckled and shook her head. "No, I'm sorry, dear; I'm still doing the character's information."
"You have been doing it for weeks now! I just can't wait to read your new story," Selene complained and sighed. "Just when are you going to start?"
"As soon as I'm sure that I know my characters good enough to write about them." A gentle smile was seen on Diana's lips and she stroked the long piece of hair out of the face of her daughter. "Just look at you. You didn't even put up your hairs correctly."
Selene stuck her tongue out at her mother, but then she redid her long black hair to a neat ponytail.
While she did it, her mother asked: "Can you pass me the notebook? That one on the shelf next to the door."
With the hair tie in her mouth, Selene just nodded silently and looked over to the notebook. She just concentrated a bit and suddenly it lifted itself and flew over to the two of them. As Diana was catching it, she gazed strictly to her daughter.
"I was asking you to pass it to me, not to use your abilities!"
"Why should I have to stand up and fetch it, while I'm having this ability?" Selene returned when she finally tamed her hair. She gazed reproachful at her mother.
Ever since she was young she had those telekinetic abilities and never knew where they came from. But Selene also did not ask about it because she just took it as natural and as a gift especially for her. Even though her parents always told her not to use it too often, she could not restrain herself since it was making her life much easier.
As always, Diana could only shake her head and sighed, while she was flipping through her notebook. She had given up scolding her daughter anymore. The girl should know what she was doing and she would be just upset if Diana was always saying the same thing to her.
That was why the mother just passed the notebook to her daughter when she found what she was looking for. "Here, this is the description of the protagonist of my story this time. Alexander von Hochburg, he is the son of Duke Raven and is in love with Princess Marie. The story will be a whole cliché, I think," Diana chuckled. "He will set out through Lancarna, find some friends and eventually rescuing the princess. Do you want to design him?"
"Oh yes!" Selene shouted and took the notes.
She had always been drawing the characters of her mother who had been a novelist for many years. Diana's stories were known throughout the world and Lancarna was a world almost every child dreamt to get there once. It was a world in which many fantasy creatures were living and where great adventures took place. Diana's books were really popular and that was why Selene was so proud of her mother – even more, that her drawings and character designs were taken as canon.
While taking out the drawing pad that Selene had been putting in her mother's atelier, she talked her thoughts out loud: "I think he has to be a very handsome guy. Very gentle, but also noble and courageous. Just your typical Prince Charming, but he is not unapproachable. In fact he is very gentle and can be friends with anyone. So …" her voice ceased as she began to sketch Alexander's body. Then she fast moved to his hairs, his facial expression and lastly to his clothes. It was like his image was already finished in her mind and she was just redrawing what she was already seeing on the blank paper.
Since it was just a quick sketch, just two minutes later she grinned proudly and gave the drawing pad to her mother. "So, what do you think?"
Curiously Diana took the sketch but when she laid her gaze on it, her smile seemed to faint. She also slightly frowned as she was looking at her daughter's design.
Because of that Selene got unconfident and began to worry. "Is something not alright, mum? Should I change anything?"
Lately she had noticed that her mother seemed to be unhappy about her drawings and sketches but she did not know why. It was always just an unpleasant feeling that made her worry so much.
But as soon as she called out for her mother, the smile returned – even brighter than before – and Diana nodded full of satisfaction.
"It's just perfect! This is really how he looks like. Now that you know all the new main characters for this story, do you want to draw a cover art? It doesn't have to be right now, just let your imagination go wild. It will take much time until I start writing on this story, so don't hurry."
As Selene saw her mother's smile again, she almost immediately forgot about her worries. She also grinned and nodded. "It's alright, since I don't have to do anything today, I will spend my time on your newest cover art! Just expect the best, when you come home this evening!"
"I see that you two are in high spirits," a male voice softly spoke to the two and a low chuckle could be heard.
"Dad! You should knock on the door! What if mum and I were talking about secret girls' things,?" Selene complained and turned around to her father. She pouted and crossed her arms.
"I know you weren't. As if you would ever talk about something like that, Selene. At least not in your mother's studio. And just how you slammed the door earlier, I knew that you just wanted to know if your mother has started the story yet," Dean grinned and leaned against the door frame. "So, honey, it's time to go. Or do you want to be late for your lecture?"
"I'm about to finish. I was just looking at Selene's wonderful drawing," Diana replied and packed her things. "Dear, can you fetch me my bag? It's still in the bedroom."
     "Okay!"
Selene just concentrated, when her father interrupted her quickly. "She said 'fetch', dear. Just stand up and go."
"Oh, geez …" The girl sighed but then she really stood up and went out of her room.
The minute she left the room, her father's facial expression changed immediately. While worrying, Dean stepped to his wife and got on his knees to look at her. "Honey, don't worry too much," he whispered.
"I'm so afraid, Dean," Diana sobbed and buried her face in her hands. "Her connection to that place is just too strong. I'm afraid that something bad will happen …"
Dean sighed and stood up. He pulled his wife's head to him and gently stroked her hair. "We will have to tell her, once she turns seventeen, honey. It's very soon – you have to be strong. And nothing has happened the last sixteen years, so just be confident, that it will be like this for a long time."
"I hope it, Dean, I really hope it. But I also hoped that she wouldn't be connected to that in anyway. But it was useless …"
As Diana sighed, everything seemed like all the hope that protected her daughter disappeared like air.
